The only town in Oman where bulls wrestle on Friday mornings — a centuries-old tradition, no blood, no harm, and Halwa so good people drive from Muscat for it.
Al Batinah Coast
On Friday mornings between October and April, the sandy arena behind Barka fills with the sound of shoulder meeting shoulder and hooves striking earth — the bull-wrestling event that has taken place here for centuries, a test of strength between bulls with no blood and no harm, where the loser simply retreats.
Barka is the only place in Oman where this specific cultural practice continues in public, and understanding that it is not bullfighting but a traditional strength competition changes the experience entirely. The town sits at the start of the Rustaq Loop, has a white sand beach, and produces Omani Halwa so well-regarded that people drive from Muscat specifically to buy it. Come on a Friday morning in season and stay for the afternoon drive toward Nakhal.
