The easiest doorway into the Wahiba Sands — where the tarmac ends and the dunes begin without warning, three hours from Muscat.
Al Sharqiyah
The golden wall of the Sharqiya Sands rises directly behind Bidiyah town without transition — no gradual slope, no warning landscape, just tarmac ending and dune beginning. This northern access point to the Wahiba Sands is the easiest place in Oman to be standing in a real desert within three hours of Muscat.
The dunes near Bidiyah are accessible enough for first-time desert visitors using a local camp's 4WD transfer, but wild enough to disorient anyone who walks more than 500 metres from the road without a bearing. Camel rides here follow routes that Bedouin families have used for generations, and the sunset from any dune crest above the town changes the colour of the sand every 10 minutes as the light drops. Go October through March; the summer heat is genuinely dangerous.
A curated selection of moments from the Al Sharqiyah.
Drive from Muscat toward Ibra and Al Qabil, then continue to Bidiyah on the edge of the Sharqiya Sands. Standard cars can reach town and meeting points, but driving into the dunes requires 4WD, reduced tyre pressure, and desert-driving experience.
