A historic Al Sharqiyah town with the only women-only market in Oman — Wednesdays only, and worth building your whole itinerary around.
Al Sharqiyah North
On Wednesday mornings, Al Minzafah market fills with Omani women selling spices, silver jewellery, embroidered cloth, and medicinal herbs to other Omani women — one of the only women-dominated market spaces remaining in the country, where men may enter the periphery but the dynamic and the commerce are entirely controlled by the sellers.
The Old Ibra district holds some of the most photogenic mudbrick towers in Al Sharqiyah — crumbling gracefully without having been scraped clean for tourism — and the surrounding hillsides contain ancient tombs requiring no ticket and no guide. Ibra functions as the natural stock-up point before Wahiba Sands, Wadi Hawir, and Wadi Bani Khalid, with good fuel stations on the Sharqiyah Expressway. The women's market is Wednesday morning only — everything else is open year-round.
