The second-largest cave chamber on earth — and the only way in is straight down, 160 metres of freefall on a rope into darkness.
Salma Plateau, Quriyat
Stand at the edge of a 160-metre vertical shaft cut through solid limestone and listen: nothing, then a whisper of cool air rising from a chamber so vast it has its own weather system. Majlis Al Jinn is the second-largest cave chamber on earth by surface area — large enough to fit the Great Pyramid of Giza inside — accessible only by expert rappelling down one of three freefall entrance shafts.
The descent takes over a minute of freefall on rope before your feet touch a floor you cannot see from the top. Named 'Meeting Place of the Spirits' by local Omanis, it remains mysterious because so few qualified climbers ever experience it. Only a handful of licensed Omani operators run this descent legally — if the credentials are right and the fitness is there, this is the most singular underground experience on earth.
