A mountain pastoral landscape of honey, orchards, and village life — the Rustaq Loop's most kept secret, almost never reached by day-trippers.
Western Hajar Mountains
Wadi Sahtan opens into a wide mountain basin that feels more like a highland valley than a canyon — date palms, falaj channels, traditional villages, and the smell of woodsmoke from houses still inhabited the same way they have been for centuries. The wadi begins near Rustaq and extends into the Western Hajar through increasingly remote terrain that most visitors to the Rustaq Loop never reach.
Unlike the famous wadis on the coastal Sur highway, Sahtan is a mountain pastoral landscape where the experience is driving through inhabited farming territory rather than walking to a single famous pool. Honey produced in the wadi's high villages is sold locally and considered among the best in Al Batinah — the apiaries are visible from the road. Experienced 4WD drivers can push through to a connection with Wadi Bani Awf; everyone else has a deep wadi landscape entirely to themselves.

Drive to Rustaq, then follow the mountain road toward Wadi Sahtan. The paved road reaches parts of the basin, but continuing to the high settlements or linking toward Wadi Bani Awf requires a proper 4WD, careful navigation, and dry weather.
