Wadi Shab

A hidden cave with a waterfall inside it — the payoff for swimming through the final dark pool, and the reason Oman's most iconic wadi deserves every superlative.

Al Sharqiyah

About this Destination

You swim through three pools before the canyon walls close completely and the light from the entrance disappears — then the gap in the rock reveals a cave, and inside the cave a waterfall drops from darkness into a lit pool where sound is entirely enclosed and everything reverberates. This is the moment that Wadi Shab exists for: a hidden cave with a waterfall inside a mountain, accessible only by swimming through the final passage.

The 2.5-kilometre hike from the boat crossing follows the canyon floor through pool after emerald pool, each one turquoise in a slightly different shade depending on depth and the angle of light over the honeycomb limestone walls. Wadi Shab is Oman's most visited wadi for reasons that remain completely justified — nothing else in the country offers this combination of accessible hiking, swimming, and a payoff this dramatic. Arrive before 7:30am on a weekday to have the cave mostly to yourself.
