About
Khasab Castle is a striking Portuguese-era fortification overlooking the harbour of Khasab, capital of Oman's dramatic and geographically isolated Musandam Peninsula. The castle museum houses ethnographic exhibits documenting the traditional life, fishing practices, and maritime culture of the Shihuh people — the indigenous tribe of Musandam who have inhabited the fjord-carved peninsula for millennia.
The Musandam Peninsula's extraordinary landscape of drowned fjords (locally called khors) isolated its inhabitants from the rest of Oman for centuries, giving rise to a distinctive culture, language dialect, and material tradition. The museum preserves this unique heritage. The castle itself offers excellent views over the Khasab harbour and the surrounding mountains.
