Tufa terraces centuries in the making, a limestone cave, and Khareef pools fed by a spring on the western edge of Salalah's fog belt.
Dhofar Governorate
The tufa formations at Ayn Garziz are built by calcium-carbonate-rich water precipitating on contact with air — a geological process slow enough that the terraces you walk across today were centuries in the making, shaped by the same spring that fills the pools at your feet.
During Khareef, the combination of increased spring flow and monsoon moisture turns the valley around Garziz genuinely green — a quality that exists nowhere else this close to Salalah without driving into the mountains. The cave above the spring is cool and dim in a way that reads differently after the exposed coastal heat, and the short path to reach it follows tufa edges requiring only minor care on wet days. Come between June and September for the fullest version of the site.

From Salalah, drive north on Ittin Street across the coastal plain, then follow the valley road toward Ayn Jarziz near the Ittin hills. The main approach is close to Salalah and suitable for a standard car in dry weather, though wet Khareef conditions can make some surfaces slippery.
