A 211-metre vertical shaft in Dhofar's limestone where bird calls rise from the depths — heard before it's seen, stranger than any photograph suggests.
Dhofar Governorate
Stand at the viewing platform at Tawi Atair and listen before you look — the bird calls rising from 211 metres below are delayed, changed in quality by the acoustics of a vertical shaft in solid limestone, producing sounds that seem to come from somewhere outside the normal geometry of space. The Well of Birds is named for what you hear before you see it.
The sinkhole is roughly 100 metres across at the rim and drops cleanly to a floor that bird colonies — and in the past, human explorers — have reached only by rope. The surrounding Dhofar plateau produced both this sinkhole and Teeq Cave nearby, meaning the karst dissolution that created both operated across the same limestone sequence at the same geological pace. Visit early for the clearest light on the shaft walls and the most active bird movement from below.

Drive east from Salalah toward Taqah and Wadi Darbat, then continue inland toward Tawi Atair village. The main viewpoint is reached by road and a short walk, but fog, rain, and slick surfaces during Khareef can make the route slower.
