About Al Jalali & Al Mirani Forts
Two magnificent 16th century Portuguese forts standing guard on either side of Al Alam Palace at the entrance to Muscat's historic harbour. Built after Ottoman attacks, these clifftop fortresses have defended Muscat for 400 years.
Al Jalali stands 506 feet high and commands sweeping views over the bay. Both forts have been converted into museums showcasing Omani military history and 17th century life. The narrow streets and ancient architecture inside are remarkably well preserved.
